Plot summary
Paul Mangin is a wealthy London recluse who keeps his house as a monument to earlier centuries. At a nightclub he meets Mifanwy Conway and becomes certain that the two of them were lovers in Renaissance Italy, and that she betrayed him there. Mifanwy likes his cultivated world but the intensity of his attention unsettles her, and so do the warnings of his housekeeper, Veronica. Mangin tells her Veronica is insane. To get free of his hold, Mifanwy travels to the Welsh countryside with Owen Rhys, an explorer who has just come back and wants to marry her. Mangin invites her to a costume ball he is giving in her honor.
