Ulrich Tukur
Biography
Ulrich Tukur is a German actor and musician. Born in Viernheim and raised near Hannover, he finished school in 1977 and then studied acting in Stuttgart from 1980, graduating in 1983 after already playing Willi Graf in Michael Verhoeven's film Die Weiße Rose as a student. His stage breakthrough came in 1984, when Peter Zadek cast him in Joshua Sobol's play Ghetto in Berlin, and he was a company actor at Hamburg's Deutsches Schauspielhaus from 1985 to 1995, playing roles such as Marc Anton in Julius Caesar and Hamlet. German theater critics named him actor of the year in 1986, and from 1995 to 2003 he directed the Hamburger Kammerspiele. He is known on screen for The White Ribbon, Solaris, North Face and Séraphine, and he won the Deutscher Filmpreis for The Lives of Others (2006) and for John Rabe (2009). He also founded the band Ulrich Tukur & the Rhythmus Boys.
