Plot summary
Dr. Chris Kelvin, a clinical psychologist, is approached by emissaries of DBA, the corporation that runs a research station in orbit around Solaris. They carry a message from his friend Dr. Gibarian, who asks Kelvin to come to the station and help with an unusual phenomenon but will not say more. DBA has lost contact with a security force sent there, and none of the astronauts want to go home. Kelvin agrees to a solo mission. On the station he meets two of those still aboard, Snow and Dr. Gordon, who are unwilling to describe the situation. A young boy runs through the station. Alone in his quarters, Kelvin dreams of Rheya, the wife he lost, and wakes to find her beside him.

- Steven Soderbergh originally wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play Chris Kelvin, but Day-Lewis was busy filming Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. Soderbergh felt obliged to send the script to his producing partner George Clooney, who wrote back a month later saying he was ready for the role.
- In early November 2002 the MPAA gave Solaris an R rating over two scenes showing George Clooney's naked backside, sparking an outcry among filmmakers. Soderbergh appealed, noting similar content had aired on network television; twelve days before release an appeals board reduced it to PG-13.
- The sex scenes between George Clooney and Natascha McElhone were filmed on a closed set with only the two actors and director Steven Soderbergh, who operated a hand-held camera himself.
