Plot summary
Bruno Davert has spent fifteen years as a chemist at a paper mill, improving its products and saving the shareholders money. The company calls the cuts a downsizing: six hundred staff go, and much of their work is outsourced, while dividends rise. Bruno is one of the six hundred. Two years later he has found nothing, and the household has given up its cable television and internet; Marlène, his wife, holds two part-time jobs. In his sector the one healthy company is Arcadia, and the handful of openings draw far too many qualified applicants. Bruno places an advertisement for a position much like the one he wants, and applications arrive from men who could beat him to it.
