Plot summary
Across one calendar year, the film travels from the Arctic in January to Antarctica in December, and the sun and the changing seasons shape what the animals do. A mother polar bear comes out of her den with two new cubs and must lead them to the sea ice where she hunts before the ice melts. In the Kalahari Desert, African bush elephants walk through a June dust storm, following paths that generations have passed down, toward watering holes. A humpback whale mother and her calf are at their breeding grounds in the shallow tropical seas. There is nothing there for the mother to eat, so she guides the calf on a long journey south to feeding grounds near Antarctica.
