Plot summary
By 1936, the north face of the Eiger has never been climbed. Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser, friends from Berchtesgaden, are enlisted in the army when they hear that an earlier party failed on that wall. They decide to make the first ascent and set out for the Bernese Alps, camping in the valley to study the routes. Luise Fellner, their friend from home, is a novice journalist whose editor, Henry Arau, sends her to cover the competition. She and Arau stay at the hotel at Kleine Scheidegg, where spectators watch the climbers from the balcony. French and Italian teams judge the conditions and call off their attempts. Toni and Andi start up first, with the Austrian pair Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer following close behind.
