Plot summary
As a student, Katja bought hashish from Nuri Sekerci, a Turkish-born Kurd, and they married while he was in prison, against their parents' wishes. After his release he opened a translation and tax business in Hamburg, where the family lives with six-year-old Rocco. One afternoon Katja leaves Rocco at the office and warns a young blonde woman who is leaving a bicycle outside. That night the street is blocked off: a nail bomb has killed Nuri and Rocco. Police set aside a jihadist motive, since Nuri was not religious or political, and look instead at revenge by drug traffickers, releasing a sketch of the blonde woman. Katja believes neo-Nazis carried out the attack.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about In the Fade (2017)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The nail-bomb attack in In the Fade was loosely based on the 2004 Cologne bombing, in which Neo-Nazis detonated a nail bomb hidden above a bicycle rack on a busy commercial street in a heavily Turkish neighborhood of Cologne. Nobody was killed, but nearly two dozen people were injured, several critically.
- The film's original title translates as "Out of Nowhere", but the English title is taken from the Queens of the Stone Age song of the same name. The band's lead singer, Josh Homme, wrote the film's score.
