Diana Ross
Biography
Diana Ross is an American singer and actress whose long career spans Motown, solo music, and screen work. Raised in Detroit, she joined the Primettes as a teenager, and the group, renamed the Supremes, became Motown's most successful act of the 1960s. After leaving the Supremes in 1970, Ross built a solo career with hits such as Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Touch Me in the Morning, Love Hangover, Upside Down, and Endless Love. She won a Golden Globe and earned an Academy Award nomination for her first film, Lady Sings the Blues (1972), in which she played Billie Holiday. She later led Mahogany (1975) and The Wiz (1978), and appeared in television movies including Out of Darkness and Double Platinum. Her honors range from a Special Tony Award and Kennedy Center Honors to a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

A first
Ross made her film debut as Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues, and became the first African-American actress nominated for an Academy Award for a debut film performance.
Big break
Ross persuaded producer Rob Cohen to cast her as Dorothy, which brought Universal Pictures in to finance the production. That casting choice changed the script, turning Dorothy from a schoolgirl into a schoolteacher.
A first
In April 1974, Ross co-hosted the Academy Awards alongside John Huston, Burt Reynolds and David Niven, and she was the first African-American woman to do so.

Ross was nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards between 1971 and 2022 but never won one, making her one of the biggest artists never to win a competitive Grammy.
