Kenny Rogers
Biography
Kenny Rogers was an American country music singer-songwriter who became a major crossover star across pop and country. Born in Houston, he launched his recording career in the late 1950s with the Scholars, later performed in the New Christy Minstrels, and then helped start the First Edition, whose psychedelic rock hit Just Dropped In brought his first major success. He began a solo run after the group split and broke through with Lucille, followed by blockbuster songs such as The Gambler and the Dolly Parton duet Islands in the Stream. Rogers collected Grammy, American Music, Academy of Country Music, and Country Music Association honors across his decades-long career and entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2013. He also acted, taking the title role in a series of television movies built around his hit The Gambler and playing a race-car driver in the feature Six Pack (1982).
