Ted Cassidy
Biography
Ted Cassidy was an American actor whose height suited him to unusual roles in offbeat and science-fiction television. He was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in Philippi, West Virginia, and he began in radio broadcasting before working as a Dallas disc jockey. His best-known role was Lurch on The Addams Family, a part he voiced in animated adaptations and reprised in a 1977 Addams Family television film. For Star Trek he supplied the voices of the more aggressive Balok and the Gorn, and he appeared as the android Ruk. He played Isaiah in the postapocalyptic pilots Genesis II and Planet Earth, and he narrated the opening of The Incredible Hulk while also contributing growls and roars. In film he appeared in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Mackenna's Gold (1969), later taking a role in The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977).

Ted Cassidy ad-libbed the line "You rang?" while playing Lurch on The Addams Family, even though the character was originally meant to be mute. The ad-lib was an immediate hit, became his signature line, and earned him more dialogue.
