Plot summary
Dylan Hunt leads PAX Team 21, a crew from PAX, a science-based society working to restore civilization after a nuclear war. On the way back from a survey of central California, the team comes under attack by militaristic mutants called the Kreeg and escapes in a subshuttle that travels underground. Pater Kimbridge is severely wounded, and saving his life requires a bioplastic repair of his pulmonary artery that only the missing doctor Jonathan Connor can perform in time. The hunt for Connor takes the team to the Confederacy of Ruth, where women hold power and men are kept as slaves called Dinks. Harper-Smythe enters the territory with Hunt bound and presented as her property. Marg, the women's leader, claims Hunt for herself.

- Gene Roddenberry was dismayed by the continuous changes that networks and studios were making, and he took his name off the project after Planet Earth failed to result in a series.
- Some of the characters served as prototypes for the later series Andromeda, also based on Roddenberry's ideas: its lead was likewise named Dylan Hunt and was frozen in time, emerging into a chaotic post-apocalyptic universe after war destroyed the civilization of his own time.
