Plot summary
An actor in Tokyo with few roles and little money, Phillip Vanderploeg takes a job with Rental Family, an agency that sends performers to stand in as relatives and friends for strangers. Its owner, Shinji, tells him the company needs a token American. A co-worker, Aiko, steadies him through the first job: acting as the fiancé of Yoshie, who wants a traditional wedding for her parents. Two longer jobs follow. Phillip acts as the father of Mia, a half-Japanese girl whose mother, Hitomi, wants him presented as Mia's real father so that Mia can enroll in a private school. He also plays a journalist interviewing Kikuo Hasegawa, a retired actor who has dementia, at the request of Kikuo's daughter, Masami, who hopes it will make her father feel remembered.
