Plot summary
A samurai of a clan that has lost its standing, Hanshiro Tsugumo comes to the castle of Lord Ii and asks to perform seppuku in its courtyard. Senior retainer Kageyu Saitō tells him of Motome Chijiiwa, another samurai of the same clan, who made the same request the year before. The Ii retainers judged that Motome was bluffing to obtain money, so they set the ritual for that day and named Hikokurō Omodaka as his second. Motome pleaded for another day and 3 ryō for treatment of his sick wife and child. Saitō urges Hanshiro to give up his request, but Hanshiro will not withdraw it.
