Plot summary
In 1570 Toyotomi Hideyoshi meets a young temple acolyte called Sakichi and brings him into his service. Sakichi gains wealth, lands and prestige as Ishida Mitsunari. Hideyoshi brings most of Japan under his rule and takes the title of taikō, then in 1595 has his previously appointed heir and the man's family executed. Mitsunari pleads for mercy and cannot move him. When the maids of one condemned woman attack Mitsunari's men, he admires their loyalty, spares them and takes one, Hatsume, into his service as a spy. He also wins Shima Sakon, a ronin, over to his side.
