SPOILER
Ehrenburg protested Pabst's changes to his original work, including a happy ending not in the book, and tried to have his name removed from the titles; he condemned the film's philistine morals, such as communist Andreas kneeling in front of the holy virgin.- After Alfred Hugenberg acquired UFA, more changes were demanded against Pabst's will, including almost completely deleting the scene where Jeanne and Andreas spend the night at the hotel.
- For the American release version, 20 minutes were cut from the film, and different camera angles were used in certain scenes.
- For authenticity, Pabst had the partying White Russians in the opening sequence played by actual White Russian expatriates.
