Plot summary
On stage Basil Underwood and Joyce Arden are a celebrated pair; off stage their life together is a series of quarrels and reconciliations, and eleven engagements have never ended at the altar. After a New Year's Eve performance of Romeo and Juliet, a wealthy young debutante, Marcia West, comes backstage to tell Basil that she adores him. He is flattered by it, and Joyce is furious. Marcia's fiancé, Henry Grant, asks Basil to visit the West country house and behave badly enough to break Marcia's ideal picture of him. Basil agrees, seeing a chance to prove himself to Joyce, and his dresser Digges comes along. He arrives at the mansion as a guest, ready to play the cad.

- Exhausted, Bette Davis went to Palm Springs to recuperate and agreed to appear only if Wallis would allow her some time for rest. He insisted she report to work on March 28, 1937, and she replied: 'Give me a week more . . . I must have a brief chance of being something more than a jittery old woman.'
- Production began without a leading lady. Wallis decided the screwball comedy would be a refreshing change of pace for Bette Davis, who had just completed the melodrama That Certain Woman, but she initially declined, feeling the better female role was that of socialite Marcia West and resenting second billing to Howard.
- Leslie Howard originally envisioned either Gertrude Lawrence or Ina Claire, both noted for their comedic stage performances, as his leading lady. Producer Hal B. Wallis had director Archie Mayo meet with Lawrence, who was interested in playing the role, but after screening the 1936 British film Men Are Not Gods, Wallis and Howard agreed she did not photograph well.
- It's Love I'm After is the basis of a stage musical comedy called Madly in Love, which interpolates songs by Vernon Duke with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg, Sammy Cahn and Martin Charnin; staged readings have been presented by the Goodspeed Opera Company and the York Theater Company.
