Plot summary
A filmmaker sets out from the Caribbean and travels down the spine of the Andes, crossing five countries to look at the leftward tilt of South American politics and at how the region's leaders are described in the press abroad. He wants to account for the standing of Venezuela's Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian revolution, and he seeks out other presidents as well: Evo Morales, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Néstor Kirchner, Rafael Correa, Raúl Castro, Fernando Lugo and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The documentary also examines the free-market policies of the United States and the International Monetary Fund, which have not eased chronic income inequality in Latin America, and points to the Argentine peso collapse of 2001 and to resentment over natural resources sold to multinational companies.
