Plot summary

Atoms of uranium in the Earth's crust carry a great deal of concentrated energy. Science unlocked it in the mid-20th century, using it at first for bombs and afterward in submarines, and the United States took the lead in generating electricity from it. A narrator now argues that nuclear power is a safe energy source able to replace fossil fuels and help fight climate change. He expects worldwide demand for electricity to double or quadruple over the next thirty years and calls for nuclear plants to be built on a mass scale. Recycling, electric cars and green products are gestures by middle-class consumers that change little. The anti-nuclear movement has treated nuclear power as the same thing as nuclear weapons, stirring a deep fear of it, and oil and gas interests have helped fund campaigns against it.
