Plot summary
Twelve-year-old Maddy often heads up the water tower near her home to climb, though her parents forbid it. Her father Tom fell more than 100 feet on a climb years earlier, and the injuries have now paralyzed him from the neck down. An experimental operation could help, but it costs $250,000, the insurance will not pay, and Donald Brisbane, president of Harderbach Financial, refuses to loan the family the money. Molly, Maddy's mother, designs the security system at that bank. Maddy recruits her friends Gus and Austin, telling each separately that she loves him and giving him half of her friendship necklace, and takes three go-karts belonging to her father's racecourse.
