Plot summary
The psychologist Charles Marlowe, at work in nineteenth-century London, is developing a drug that he believes will release a patient's inhibitions, and the people who come to him for treatment serve as his first test subjects. He sets out the principles of Freud to his friend Dr. Lanyon, and then he tries the drug on himself. The dose brings forward a second self, Edward Blake, an ugly and evil man who goes about the city under that name. Utterson, who acts as Marlowe's lawyer and is also his friend, believes that Blake is another person, a man who may be blackmailing Charles.
