Plot summary
Nine-year-old George lives in Stepney with his mother, Rita, his grandfather Gerald, a pianist, and the family cat, Olly. With the German bombing of London under way, Gerald urges Rita to evacuate the boy to the countryside. George is the mixed-race son of Rita and Marcus, a Black man deported to Grenada; before he leaves, Rita gives him a Saint Christopher medallion that belonged to his father. George, upset at being sent away, refuses to say goodbye, and Rita is distraught at the station. Boys on the train taunt him about his hair, and he stands up to them with a line he learned from Gerald. He jumps off the train to return to London.
