Plot summary
Hedda Gabler Tesman has recently married George Tesman, an academic in debt, and money is short. Their future depends on a professorship that Professor Greenwood has yet to award, so Hedda holds a party at their estate to press George's claim. Thea Clifton, a writer who has left her husband, arrives as the partner and co-author of Dr. Eileen Lovborg, Hedda's former lover. The two women have written a manuscript on sexuality, the only copy of Eileen's work. Eileen and George are rivals for the same post. Eileen's arrival stirs feelings Hedda had put aside.

- Nia DaCosta first conceived of adapting Henrik Ibsen's play Hedda Gabler in 2012 while pursuing a master's degree in the United Kingdom, wrote her first draft in 2018, and kept refining the script every six months even while working on Candyman and The Marvels.
- Eve Hewson and Callum Turner were among the cast announced in June 2023, but both were replaced in January 2024 by Imogen Poots and Tom Bateman.
