Karl Markovics
Biography
Karl Markovics is an Austrian actor and director who built his career on the stage before becoming a familiar face in Austrian film and television. Born in Vienna, he was turned down by the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar and instead began performing at the Serapions Theater, later joining the Wiener Ensemble in 1987. Television made him widely known through the role of Ernst Stockinger in Inspector Rex and its spin-off Stockinger, while films such as Geboren in Absurdistan (1999) and Come Sweet Death (2000) followed. He played Salomon Sorowitsch in Stefan Ruzowitzky's The Counterfeiters (2007), which won Austria its first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Markovics has worked at Vienna's Theater in der Josefstadt and Wiener Volkstheater, where he directed The Bald Singer in 2005, and he wrote and directed Atmen in 2011.

Early training
Markovics failed the entrance exam for the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar, but that did not stop him from pursuing his dream. He started performing at the Serapions Theater in Vienna.
Beyond film
Markovics is still a frequent stage actor. In April 2010 he played Samiel, a non-singing role, in Der Freischütz, the first opera production by Counterfeiters director Ruzowitzky, at Vienna's Theater an der Wien.
First role
Markovics got his first film part in 1991, in the movie Hund und Katz, after years of stage work with the Wiener Ensemble.
Big break
Markovics became known to a wider audience as Ernst Stockinger on the Austrian crime show Inspector Rex, and the character later got its own spin-off series, Stockinger.
