Plot summary
Salzburg, 2000. The elderly Lída Baarová recounts her life to a journalist. Her story begins in 1930s Czechoslovakia, where she becomes a leading film actress. A move to Germany brings her a role in the film Barcarole and entry into the social world of the Nazi Party elite in Berlin. There she meets Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister, whose interest in her develops into a relationship, and she faces a moral dilemma over her involvement with a senior Nazi official. Around her, the politics of the new regime unfold, with Goebbels answering to Adolf Hitler, and the families of the Party's leaders appear at its gatherings.
