Plot summary
In Berlin, Salomon Sorowitsch makes his living by forging currency and passports, and spends his money on cards, drink and women. The police arrest him, and he is imprisoned in a labor camp and then at Mauthausen, where he paints portraits of the guards and their families and earns extra food. His skill brings him wider attention. He is transferred to Sachsenhausen and placed with prisoners who have artistic and printing talents and set to work on a secret forgery operation. Their quarters have bunks, a washroom and enough food. Adolf Burger refuses to put his skills to work for the German war effort, while Sorowitsch is made leader of the team, and Herzog demands perfect pound notes.

- The film is based on Adolf Burger's 1983 Czech-language memoir Komando padělatelů, published in English as The Devil's Workshop. Burger, a Jewish Slovak typographer imprisoned in 1942 for forging baptismal certificates to save Jews from deportation, was later interned at Sachsenhausen to work on Operation Bernhard.
