Plot summary
In Roseville, Ella Cinders does the chores in the house her late father left, for her stepmother, Myrtle "Ma" Cinders, and her stepsisters, Lotta Pill and Prissy Pill, who are admired around town but harsh with her at home. The iceman, Waite Lifter, is friendly to her. The Gem Film Company runs a contest that promises the winner an all-expenses-paid trip to Hollywood and a part in a movie. Ella takes an acting book from Lotta to practice expressions, and she babysits three nights to raise the three dollars a photograph costs. The photographer catches her pulling a face at an insect, and that picture goes in as her entry. Her family refuses to let her go to the Town Hall ball, where entrants must appear, and Waite offers to take her.
