Plot summary
Katie Higgins lives with her dairy-farming family, and the whole household, Pa, Ma, Suzie, Katie and Junior, begins each day with a song and a swim. A traveling salesman named Windy Weebe arrives selling an elixir that promises vigor, and after watching the family in the water he proposes they attempt the English Channel. The Higginses travel to England with Weebe, where they learn the crossing can run as long as 42 miles with the currents. Katie alone is strong enough to try, and Weebe coaches her. On a foggy day a Frenchman, Andre Lanet, pulls her from the water and begins to court her, and she finds herself pulled between him and her training.

- The ending of Dangerous When Wet was rewritten after an incident during filming in which Johnny Weissmuller, Esther Williams's former Aquacade partner, dived into the water to swim alongside Florence Chadwick, the swimmer he was coaching.
- For the underwater scenes in which Esther Williams speaks with Tom and Jerry, animator Joseph Barbera drew pink bubbles coming out of her mouth, an effect that cost $50,000.
- Fernando Lamas at first declined the role of André Lanet, saying he had come to MGM to be a star and wanted to act only in "important pictures"; Esther Williams convinced him his part would be rewritten to be larger.
- Debbie Reynolds was originally slated to play Suzie, the little sister of Esther Williams's character, in Dangerous When Wet.
