Plot summary
Maximus, an American stage mind reader, arrives in England with his parents and wife Rene. Their music hall act depends on a secret code, with Rene feeding him answers. During one show he sees Christine Shawn in the audience, and the pretense becomes real: he can read a sealed letter without her help. On a train he foresees a crash, pulls the emergency cord, and leaves with his family and Christine before the wreck. Christine's father owns a newspaper and publishes the story, making Maximus famous. His gift operates only when Christine is close. Christine and Maximus begin to spend time together, and she falls in love with him; Rene becomes jealous, while his mother warns that no good can come of the gift.
