Whitney Houston

Biography

Whitney Houston was an American singer, actress and producer who sang in her mother's band as a teenager and signed with Arista Records at nineteen. Her debut album, Whitney Houston (1985), became the best-selling solo debut in music history, and Whitney (1987) made her the first woman to enter the charts at number one in both the US and the UK. She placed eleven singles at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, including seven in a row. On screen she appeared in The Bodyguard (1992), Waiting to Exhale (1995), The Preacher's Wife (1996), Cinderella (1997) and Sparkle (2012), and she produced the Princess Diaries and Cheetah Girls franchises. The Bodyguard soundtrack spent 20 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and earned album of the year at the Grammys; I Will Always Love You from it was named record of the year, and she also received that prize for best female pop vocal performance.

Behind the award
At the 1994 Grammy Awards, Houston won Album of the Year for the soundtrack, becoming the first black woman to take the prize as both producer and artist.
A role that slipped away
Houston got film offers that included work with Robert De Niro, Quincy Jones and Spike Lee, but she felt the timing was wrong. Her first film role came in The Bodyguard, released in 1992.
A first
Houston produced The Princess Diaries (2001) with Debra Martin Chase. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews starred, and the film grossed over $165 million worldwide, making Houston and Chase the first black producers in box office history to pass $100 million.
