Plot summary
In 1918, Mrs. Allen is a widow raising three children, Lucy, Jamie and baby Benjamin, in a cramped Camden Town flat. A solicitor, Mr. Frederick Percival Blunden, calls with an offer from his firm: the family can take on the care of Langley Park, a country mansion left derelict after a fire and held until its heirs are traced. Mrs. Allen accepts the post despite talk that the place is haunted. Settled in the grounds, Lucy and Jamie see two figures, a teenage girl named Sara Latimer and her younger brother Georgie, who lived there a century earlier. The pair say they are orphans in the care of their uncle Bertie and of Mr. Blunden.

- Spike Milligan, Gert Fröbe, Gene Wilder, David Niven, Michael Gough, David Tomlinson, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Donald Pleasence and Robert Helpmann were all considered for the role of Mr. Blunden.
- Lionel Jeffries originally promised Sally Thomsett the role of Lucy, and she was cast, but personal problems forced her to withdraw shortly before production began; Lynne Frederick replaced her.
- Rosalyn Landor and Lynne Frederick had both just come off being turned down for the role of Alice in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972) before being cast in this film.
- The derelict, fire-ravaged stately home of the story was in fact Heatherden Hall, on the estate of Pinewood Studios, which at the time served as administration offices for the production facilities.
