Plot summary
Peter Neal writes horror and thriller novels, and he has traveled from the United States to Italy to promote his newest book, Tenebrae. Anne, who assists him, and Bullmer, who acts as his agent, make the trip with him. Jane, to whom he was once engaged, has come to Rome as well, without his knowledge. Shortly before he arrives, a young shoplifter named Elsa is killed with a razor. A letter then reaches Neal from the murderer, who claims his books set him on a killing spree. Captain Germani, a reader of Neal's novels, and Inspector Altieri lead the investigation. Tilde, a journalist who calls the books sexist, and her lover Marion are found dead in Tilde's home.
