Plot summary
Ringo, a gunfighter known as Angel Face, shoots men in self-defense in southern Texas around Christmas and lands in jail to await trial. Mexican bandits then rob the town bank of fifty thousand dollars. Their leader, Sancho, takes a bullet while the gang rides off, and the outlaws seize the estate of Major Clyde, keeping everyone inside as their prisoners. The sheriff arrives with his posse and surrounds the property. Sancho's men warn that unless the siege is lifted they will put two captives to death every day. The sheriff fears for those inside, among them his fiancée Ruby, who is the major's daughter. He asks Ringo to slip into the gang in return for his freedom and a cut of the money taken from the bank.

- The gunfighter Ringo is loosely based on the real gunfighter Johnny Ringo, but was written as the opposite of Sergio Leone's Man with No Name: talkative, well dressed, clean-shaven and preferring milk to whiskey.
- The success of Duccio Tessari and Giuliano Gemma's Ringo films set off a run of unofficial Italian sequels and spin-offs, among them $10,000 for Ringo (1965), Ringo and Gringo Against All (1966) and Two R-R-Ringos from Texas (1967).
- Ennio Morricone's theme, performed by Maurizio Graf, was a more traditional American western ballad than his earlier Spaghetti Western scores and went to number one on the Italian charts.
- The English-language version cut scenes to sharpen the action, including one where Ringo removes a bullet from Sancho's shoulder, the scene that explained why the henchman Filipe wears a bandage after Ringo broke his hand with a goblet.
- In the final scene, Major Clyde says his grandfather used the flintlock pistol he throws to Ringo at Waterloo in the English version, but at Austerlitz in the original, the French defeat at Waterloo being swapped out to please European audiences.
- A Pistol for Ringo was Giuliano Gemma's first Spaghetti Western; he had previously co-starred in Tessari's My Son, the Hero and went on to star in One Silver Dollar (1965) and Adios, Gringo (1965).
