Plot summary
New York in the 1930s. Sonny, an ice cream man who has fallen on hard luck, works as a cleaner in a gym, where he meets the wrestler Charlie Smith. The two become friends despite their different characters, Charlie blunt and aloof, Sonny a womanizer. The mobster Angelo hires them to hit a gambler, but they beat up a US Senator instead, and the Senator declares a war on the underworld. To get them out of the heat, Angelo sends them into Little Italy as debt collectors. There they grow friendly with the Geraces, a family short of money. Mr. Colosimo, a rival of Angelo, has collectors on the same streets.
