Plot summary
Nullo works in a factory in Milan and is an anarchist trade unionist who has never been baptized. Carmela, his colleague there, emigrated with her family from Sicily, and she comes from a family that carries the Catholic respectability and traditions of the South. Nullo falls in love with her, and she slowly allows herself to love him. The chances for a happy relationship between them are poor, because Carmela is torn between the freedoms she finds in the North and the traditional Sicilian values she was raised with.
