Plot summary

In 161 AD the emperor Marcus Aurelius has twin sons, and to prevent a future struggle over the throne one of them is to be put to death. Senator Tarrunius cannot bring himself to do it and gives the baby to a peasant family, who raise him as Lucius Crassus. Commodus, the other twin, takes the purple thirty years later and rules as a tyrant, spending his time in the arena while his corrupt friends manage Rome. When his mistress Marcia urges him to think of the people, he loses interest in her. Tarrunius seeks out Lucius, now a centurion loved by his men, and asks him to oppose his brother. Lucius refuses at first, but the suffering he sees changes his mind, and with his fellow centurions Horatius, Pannuntius and Pompeius he follows the senator to Rome.
