Plot summary
Claire McKay arrives on Ironbound Island with her mother, Fiona, who was born there and hopes the quiet will help her daughter recover from the death of her boyfriend. Claire finds comfort in the stories told by Celia, an eccentric local writer whose tales weave her own memories of the island together with its legends. One concerns a Viking curse: a longship sank in the bay centuries ago, and every fifty years a chosen islander is born, destined to be taken by the sea so that fish keep returning to the island's waters. Celia tells of Silly, a grief-stricken teenager of 1949.
