Plot summary

Summer arrives, and three high school friends, Kenny Leeds, Mike Decker and Tommy Kingsley, expect to become men before it ends. Some of them want this badly; others are pushed along by their friends. Kenny is sent away from his friends to live with his grandparents in Buffalo. His father, a widowed salesman, is away on a business trip with the woman he plans to marry. With nothing to do in an unfamiliar city, Kenny sends Mike and Tommy letters describing his adventures at Rosie's, a brothel just over the Canadian border in Niagara Falls. Rosie's exists only in his imagination.
