Plot summary
Gertie Nevels carves wood and raises five children in the hills of Appalachia while her husband Clovis farms. Clovis is sure a factory job in Detroit will bring the family steady wages, and although Gertie wants to stay, they move north. They settle into a tar paper shack in an industrial neighborhood by the tracks. In the city Clovis dismisses her carving as folk art that has no place in a modern world, even though the people around her admire what she makes. Gertie keeps a length of branch, one she believes holds a figure of Jesus asking to be carved. As setbacks press on the family, Gertie starts making hand-carved dolls to bring in money for her children.
