Plot summary
Rome in 1978 is unsettled by student unrest and by violent attacks carried out by the Red Brigades, and David Raybourne, an American novelist, lives there and works at a small English-language newspaper. His romantic partner is Lia, who is married to an Italian industrialist but separated from him, and Italo Bianchi, a lecturer at a Rome university with left-leaning politics, is a friend. David wants to earn money from a commercial novel so that he can marry Lia and support her as she expects, so he studies the Red Brigades, how they are organized and what they do. His draft is realistic but invented, and its plot turns on the kidnapping of a leading political figure. He also meets Alison King, a young photojournalist who wants a story, and he introduces her to Bianchi.
