Plot summary
Ella has lived in a lord's household since her mother died, and the lord's daughters treat her as their servant, which makes her unhappy. The prince of the country is a dreamer who does not see that his chancellor abuses his power. By law the prince must find a wife, and a celebration is arranged on a frozen lake. Ella comes onto the ice too and skates there without revealing who she is. The prince falls for the skater and sets out to find her, while the chancellor, who knows Ella's critical thoughts about the country, tries to hinder him.
