Plot summary
The man who drives Nomi Malone into Las Vegas takes off with her suitcase, leaving her at a slot machine inside a casino. A seamstress named Molly Abrams finds her crying in the parking lot and gives her a place in her trailer, and Nomi takes work at Cheetah's, a topless club run by Al Torres, where she calls herself a dancer. Backstage at the Stardust, where Molly sews costumes for the revue Goddess, Nomi meets the show's star, Cristal Connors, who dismisses club dancing as a form of prostitution. Nomi's furious answer interests Cristal. That night Nomi skips her shift and goes dancing with Molly at the Crave Club, where she kicks a bouncer named James Smith and is taken to jail.

Ireland's film censor banned Showgirls in 1995 not for its rape scene, as many assumed, but specifically over a line of dialogue referring to 'the fuckin' Virgin Mary'.- Showgirls won a then-record seven Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, from a record 13 nominations, a nomination record that still stands.
- Writer Joe Eszterhas was paid $2 million to write the Showgirls script and another $1.7 million once it was made, and combined with his fees for Basic Instinct and Sliver, it made him the highest-paid screenwriter in Hollywood history at the time.
- Before Elizabeth Berkley won the lead role of Nomi Malone, the studio considered a long list of other actresses, including Pamela Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie, Jenny McCarthy, Denise Richards, Jennifer Lopez, and Charlize Theron.
- Dylan McDermott was the first choice to play entertainment director Zack Carey but turned the role down, and Kyle MacLachlan was cast in his place.
- Director Paul Verhoeven deliberately aimed Showgirls at an NC-17 rating after his previous film, Basic Instinct, had clashed with the MPAA and had to be cut down to secure an R rating.
