Plot summary
Otis, a friend of the family, has sold an Alabama farm and shared the proceeds among his children. His son Rudolph is coming to California, and Otis hopes Joe Lucasta will help Rudolph find a wife. Joe's son Stanley and his son-in-law Frank see a way to get the money by arranging the match themselves. Joe's wife Theresa suggests Anna, the youngest daughter, whom Joe long ago turned out of the house. Stanley, Frank and his wife Stella think Anna unsuitable and plan to pass her off as respectable. Joe objects, until Frank wears him down and he travels to San Diego, where Anna lives at a dockside cafe, kept in meals, drinks and a bed by sailors. Danny Johnson offers her a room, though not marriage. Anna agrees to come home with her father.
