Plot summary
India's seventh hijacking in five years comes in 1984, when terrorists seize Indian Airlines Flight 691. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, frustrated by the concessions granted to earlier hijackers, lets a RAW agent code-named Bell Bottom handle the case. He is a clerk the officials around him regard with consternation, and they reject his deduction that the separatist group Azaadi Dal answers to Pakistan's ISI. His mother Raavi, an asthmatic, died aboard a hijacked flight in 1979, and RAW brought him in, telling him how she had been made to suffer; he hid the work from his wife Radhika by claiming to be an embassy officer. When the plane lands in Amritsar he is dismissed, and it flies on to Lahore, from where he prepares a covert operation in Dubai.

- Bell Bottom was banned in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, where certification authorities said it tampered with historical facts: the 1984 hijacking was actually resolved by UAE Defence Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the UAE authorities, not by Akshay Kumar's character and his team.
- Bell Bottom was inspired by real hijackings of Indian Airlines flights 423, 405 and 421, carried out by Khalistani terrorists in India during the 1980s.
- Bell Bottom became the first film to begin shooting in India after the COVID-19 pandemic, completing principal photography in a single schedule in Glasgow and London from 20 August to 30 September 2020.
