Davy Kaye

Biography

Davy Kaye was a British entertainer and comedy actor. Raised in the East End of London, he performed in school revues and turned professional at the Mile End Empire in 1935. During the Second World War he put on shows for troops at munitions factories, RAF bases and Army camps, and became a regular on BBC radio. After the war he toured his own revues and appeared on stage, including as Benny Southstreet in the original London production of Guys and Dolls in 1953. His films included Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), The Wrong Arm of the Law (1963), Carry On Cowboy (1965), Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972) and Carry On at Your Convenience (1971). He also played Natty Dan in Young Sherlock: The Mystery of the Manor House (1982) and acted in Sapphire and Steel. He was made an MBE in 1995 and died in 1998.

Beyond film
Between 1954 and 1968, Kaye put on a fresh show every month at the Embassy Club in London. He also took roles in Androcles and the Lion and The Bishop's Bonfire at the Mermaid Theatre.
Behind the award
The Variety Club of Great Britain honored Kaye with two lunches at the Dorchester Hotel, in 1985 and 1995, celebrating his 50th and 60th years in show business. The BBC televised both.
Behind the award
Kaye was a Past King Rat of the Grand Order of Water Rats in 1984, later served as Preceptor, and received the Order's Badge of Merit and Bar, its highest honor.
