Arthur Mullard
Biography
Arthur Mullard was an English actor and singer who became known for cockney character parts in film and television comedy after military service and a short boxing career. He took stunt work at Pinewood and Ealing studios, then moved into small, often uncredited, roles in British films such as The Ladykillers, Oliver Twist and The Lavender Hill Mob. On television he worked as a foil for comics including Benny Hill, Tony Hancock and Frankie Howerd. His highest profile came as Wally Briggs in the London Weekend Television sitcom Romany Jones, which first aired in 1973, and its 1976 sequel Yus, My Dear. He reprised Wally for Holiday on the Buses (1973), and his films included Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment (1966), The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery (1966) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). In 1978 his duet with Hylda Baker, a cover of You're the One That I Want, reached number 22 in the UK Singles Chart.
