Cynda Williams
Biography
Cynda Williams is an American actress who studied theater at Ball State University and graduated in 1989, after growing up in Chicago's Pullman neighborhood. She took the name Cynda professionally that year so she would not be confused with another actress already registered with the Screen Actors Guild. Her first feature film was Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues (1990), and she went on to headline the thriller One False Move (1992), a role that brought her a Best Female Lead nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards. She appeared in the Channel 4 and PBS miniseries Tales of the City, and she also worked in music, singing Harlem Blues on the Mo' Better Blues soundtrack; the single hit No. 9 on the R&B charts. Sony lined up an album with her, but it was shelved after internal disagreements at the label.

About the name
In 1989, to avoid a conflict with Cindy Williams, the Laverne & Shirley actress who was already listed by that name with the Screen Actors Guild, Williams changed her first name to "Cynda".
First role
Williams made her feature film debut in Spike Lee's 1990 Mo' Better Blues, and later said that in the Midwest casting directors told her she was not the right type because she did not look black enough or white enough.
Beyond film
Williams appeared on the Mo' Better Blues soundtrack in 1990 with the song "Harlem Blues", which reached No. 9 on the R&B charts, and Sony lined her up to produce her own album, but it was shelved after internal disagreements.
