Plot summary

John and Leann Netherwood are fugitives wanted for murder, moving from place to place with their young daughter, Janie. During a robbery that turns violent, the police close in and Janie is taken into the care of an adoption agency, shaken by what she has seen. A case worker places her with Russell Clifton, a Los Angeles architect, and his wife Dana, a photographer, who bring her into their home. Janie is bright and charming, but her fears surface in nightmares, hiding places and a bread knife hidden under her pillow for protection. As the Cliftons try to settle into life with their new daughter, the Netherwoods begin searching for Janie, and the couple who adopted her have no idea who is coming.
