Charles Richman
Biography
Charles Richman was an American actor of the stage and screen, credited in more than sixty films released between 1914 and 1939. Born in the Kenwood section of Chicago, he studied law at the Chicago College of Law in evening classes before amateur acting at the Carleton Club turned his ambitions toward the theater; a backer's offer to finance a touring company he led took him to New York. His Broadway career stretched from playing Horst von Neuhoff in The Countess Gucki in 1896 to Grandfather Trenchard in And Stars Remain in 1936, and in 1906 he founded the Garrick Theatre Stock Company, starring in and directing its first production, David Gray's Gallops. In Hollywood he was usually cast as dignified authoritarians, among them General Tufto in Becky Sharp (1935) and Judge Thatcher in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938). He died in 1940.
