Brian May

Biography

Brian May is an English musician who co-founded Queen with the singer Freddie Mercury and the drummer Roger Taylor, playing lead guitar and adding backing vocals. Born near Twickenham, he played with the progressive rock band Smile while he was at university, and Queen formed in 1970. He wrote many of the group's hits, among them We Will Rock You, I Want It All, Fat Bottomed Girls and The Show Must Go On, and his layered work on a guitar he built himself, the Red Special, gave the band much of its sound. Queen played the biggest venues in the world and appeared at Live Aid in 1985. May has also recorded solo and toured with Queen alongside Paul Rodgers and later Adam Lambert, and he appeared in Party at the Palace (2002). Queen entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2023 he was knighted.
