Biography
Freddie Mercury was a British singer and songwriter best known as the frontman and pianist of Queen, the band he started in 1970 with Brian May and Roger Taylor. Born in Zanzibar in 1946, he grew up largely in India before his family moved to England. He wrote many of Queen's hits, among them Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love and We Are the Champions, and his flamboyant stage manner shaped the group's theatrical direction. His 1985 Live Aid set with Queen was counted among his finest performances. He also released two solo albums, Mr. Bad Guy (1985) and Barcelona (1988), the second recorded with soprano Montserrat Caballé, and the documentary Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender (2012) looked at that solo work. He collected a Brit Award with Queen and the same prize on his own after his death, and Queen later earned a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He died in 1991.

Behind the camera
Before Queen's first album came out, Mercury created the band's logo, called the "Queen crest." It brings together the four members' zodiac signs: two lions stand for Deacon and Taylor, a crab for May, and two fairies for Mercury.
First role
In 1972, while Queen recorded their debut album, Trident Studios engineer Robin Geoffrey Cable recruited Mercury for a project. Under the name Larry Lurex, Mercury sang lead on "I Can Hear Music" and "Goin' Back", issued as one single in 1973.
Getting ready for a role
Mercury's main stage prop was a broken microphone stand, which he began using after accidentally snapping it off its heavy base during an early performance.
